2zips

How much of the US does 2zips cover?

Three ways to answer the question "when someone types a US address, how likely is 2zips to show them real, checked tax rates?" — weighted by where people live, how much land the state covers, and how much tax money flows through it. The three views tell different stories: the population view credits the dense states where most people live; the land view weights Alaska the same as New Jersey, so big lightly-populated states pull it down; the tax-money view shows whether the states with verified rates handle most of the country's taxes.

§01

Three ways to measure coverage

Population, land mass, and tax revenue — each tells a different story about what we've actually covered.

Coverage by US population

Share of Americans who live in a state where 2zips can return real, checked tax rates for their address.

Core layers verified — 241.5M peoplePartly verified — 92.3M people

Source: US Census Bureau — ACS 2024 1-Year Estimates (Total Population by State) (2024). Total 333.8M people across 50 states + DC.

Coverage by US land mass

Share of US land mass covered by states we've set up. Lower than the population view when the biggest states geographically (Alaska, Montana, Wyoming) aren't covered yet.

Core layers verified — 2,436,988 sq miPartly verified — 1,094,919 sq mi

Source: US Census Bureau — State Area Measurements (land area only, excluding inland water) (2010 (state land area is functionally constant decade-to-decade)). Total 3,531,907 sq mi across 50 states + DC.

Coverage by Aggregate state + local tax revenue

Share of total US state + local tax dollars that come from states we've set up. Higher than the population view when the verified states (NY, CA, IL, TX) handle a big share of the country's taxes.

Core layers verified — $1.45TPartly verified — $746B

Source: US Census Bureau — Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances — Total Tax Revenue by State (FY 2022) (FY 2022 (latest published Annual Survey at time of authoring; ~2-year publication lag is normal for this Census product)). Total $2.19T across 50 states + DC.
